Ghodaghodi Lake
The primary area conservation site for Ghodaghodi Lake is the Ghodaghodi Lake Complex, designated as a Ramsar Site of international importance on August 13, 2003, and as Nepal’s first Bird Sanctuary in March 2022. This protected area encompasses a system of 13 interconnected freshwater oxbow lakes, marshes, and meadows, and functions as a vital wildlife corridor between the Terai lowlands and the Siwalik Hills.
Key Conservation Designations:
- Ramsar Site: Recognized for its significance as a wetland of international importance, supporting a high number of wetland-dependent birds and a key population of the Cotton Pygmy Goose.
- Bird Sanctuary: Declared in 2022 to provide better management and promote sustainable use and promotion of its rich avian biodiversity.
- Important Bird Area (IBA): Enlisted by BirdLife International for its importance to birds.
Conservation and Management:
- Ghodaghodi Lake Area (GLA) Conservation Project:The Ghodaghodi Municipality has established the “Comprehensive Ghodaghodi Lake and Tourism Development Board (CGLTDB)” to manage the area.
- Master Plan:The CGLTDB is developing a comprehensive master plan to guide the conservation and tourism development of the lake area.
